Mobility

One reason I'm taking these next steps is mobility.

I've spent my whole life moving. I grew up moving. My father was in sales. We moved all over California.  I went to four different high schools. Even if we lived in a specific area for a while it seems that we would even move to different houses.

When I met my ex one of the things we had in common is that he had moved around a lot as well. Even before he joined the military we lived three different places in the same area. In the early days after high school, before the military, for most moves I threw things in large garbage bags, called a few friends, and moved within a couple of hours. Didn't have much and the items I have were hand-me-downs. I had not yet begun to acquire  my own possessions.

Being married and  having a family, I catered to my husband and my children. Their tastes and their desires. Only thing that was nice while being in the military is the military moved us. We did move a lot and yes even while we were stationed at one location we still continued to move into several different homes. Because of the military, with weight limits, I still ran a pretty tight ship on how much we collected. There was always a purge before a move and later on I would regularly review everything on a six-month basis.  From my experience of knowing people in the military I did a pretty good job at keeping our possessions to a minimum.

The first place I moved after my divorce was my own, very own, first apartment. It was the experiment for finding my place. Without any other persons considerations, likes,  or dislikes. I truly enjoyed finding my own way, living in pink and blue, and many sparkly things. I didn't know what I was facing so I didn't really know what I need it or what I didn't need. So I had a lot of things.

Then I moved in with my roommate. I didn't have a kitchen (we had a common room for it) so I kept some basics, my favorite dishes and many favorite glasses. I think I even had several Starbucks mugs at the time. I didn't really get rid of much more on that move. And then I moved here.

As many of you know before I moved here I started reading Marie Kondo's  book about being tidy. I learned many things from that book and by following her directions. Before I even moved  many things left my possession to go on to do better things.

This was my first big move. Meaning I had not moved this far in distance in my single life. This move would not be done in a few hours in a day with the help of friends. I would have to pack all my stuff, put it in a U-Haul, and with the help of my dad, drive across a few states. Although I'm sure he would have preferred to drive straight through it did take us two days.

It's time for me to get ready to work. There will be another part of the story in the near future.
