now i don't specifically work for the government nor am i in any need of government services in the next 20ish days. however, i don't think collectively us non-governments workers can sit back and say 'woo care'?
my co-worker actually thought that furloughed employees still got paid. is this the majority of thinking? i hope not. because they don't. and most times furloughed employees cannot claim vacation days, either. and there's no unemployment because technically you're not unemployed - just sort of - laid off.
this is not the first time we've shut down our government. i remember at least two times while my ex was active duty that we and the commanders of our base had back up financial plans to loan military personnel money if their paychecks stopped. and, no, you can't stop going to work if you're in the military. there is a law that requires military personnel to continue guarding our country, without pay...ok...i think it's six months but i can't find it on g00gle right now because it's all up in the current furlough...which, if you did not know, the president did sign a bill to pay military personnel during this current furlough.
now, a civil servant of the government, meaning a person hired by the government to do a job for the government who is not in the military -- the majority of these are being furloughed. unless their job is necessary to run the country. so now you have a whole 'nuther set of people not getting money. and, our representatives and or with the president refused to sign a bill to fund are veterans. here's a quote from the huffington post
What about my VA disability, pension, or GI Bill? Will I still get those?
All payments for the month of October are already out. VA benefits are protected and should go out during a shutdown. However, the VA recently announced that if the shutdown lasts longer than 2-3 weeks, the VA might not have enough cash on hand to pay benefits in November.
Does that mean that I won't get my benefits in November?
Possibly. The VA has not given any specifics on what will happen if the shutdown continues for the next few weeks, and they run out of cash on hand. IAVA will keep pushing for more information and get it to you as soon as possible.
so if the furlough lasts more than 2-3 weeks there might not be any money to pay our retired, disabled veterans. now i think that should get some attention.
and, if you consider that the government is one of the biggest employer, according to our president, then there are many more people out of pay than you think.
these things do not fall in forest without sound - or make waveless rings in the pool. money is what makes our world go round. you wanted steak tonight? maybe it's mac and cheese because you've lost two days of pay. obviously that affects your stomach but also the meat industry. and on and on it's goes.
for me personally it may effect my finances as well. my ex is a partially disabled vet who is currently employed but furloughed by the government. my ex pays me alimony and 50% of the retirement pay. i don't think this will actually happen due to other reasons -- but -- still -- it hits close to home.
i'm not sure exactly who is to blame or how we can or cannot right the ship - but it won't take many more days before the people get more and more frustrated. with all the government.
as always i cannot put my trust in the government, or my ex, or my job. those chariots and horses are flighty.
May the Lord answer you when you are in distress;
may the name of the God of Jacob protect you.
May he send you help from the sanctuary and grant you support from Zion.
May he remember all your sacrifices and accept your burnt offerings.
May he give you the desire of your heart and make all your plans succeed.
May we shout for joy over your victory and lift up our banners in the name of our God.
May the Lord grant all your requests.
Now this I know: The Lord gives victory to his anointed.
He answers him from his heavenly sanctuary with the victorious
power of his right hand.
Some trust in chariots and some in horses,
but we trust in the name of the Lord our God.
They are brought to their knees and fall,
but we rise up and stand firm Lord, give victory to the king!
Answer us when we call!
dance on people
